Supporting the community!

Down the Hatch & Breakwall Shave Ice supporting the community!

Community is of the utmost importance to Down the Hatch and Breakwall Shave Ice Co. The people of Lahaina have fully embraced us, giving us support, helping us to grow our local business. We always strive to give back, and we are always looking for new outlets to support our community and maintain relationships with the organizations that we have already worked with.

As we near our 2nd Anniversary (August 19th, 2017) Down the Hatch reflects on what we have done in our short time in business, and hope to continue the run. Here’s a recap of just a few of our past events.

EARTH DAY SCAVENGER HUNT

Helping to keep the beautiful island of Maui clean, and also always raising awareness is so important to us. This past Earth Day we hosted our first Annual Scavenger Hunt, partnering with Spanky’s Ridtide and Fleetwood’s on Front St. to raise money for the Save Honolua Coalition.

Teams participated by dressing up to bring awareness to the community as they scavenged for different items around Lahaina Town. Congrats to the winning team “Flower Powered”!

Other efforts that we have participated in during the last year include several clean-ups of the Honolua Bay area organized by local environmentalist Les Potts.  Below DTH co-owners Javier Barberi and Julian Bonfardin unload garbage picked up during bay clean-up at the dump.

BREAKWALL @ THE BREAKWALL

Breakwall @ The Breakwall Surf Contest returned for the 2nd time this past May with Maui Surf Ohana and Breakwall Shave Ice Co.  Supporting the local surf community and hosting at our favorite break brought awareness to the local surf talent, giving our keiki more opportunity to show their skills. A big thank you to John Willard for organizing such an incredible surf event! See the winners below.

MONDAY NIGHT SURF MOVIES

We are always excited to host new and fun events that support other businesses in Maui. Island Eye Productions approached DTH about premiering their surf films Down the Hatch, and we were more than happy to bring an event that helps local film makers, as well as showcasing the local surfers in Maui.

LOCAL ARTISTS

Over the past year and a half, Down the Hatch and Breakwall Shave Ice Co. have opened our doors to local artists of Maui to showcase their work on Lahaina’s 2nd Friday. With all the amazing art in Maui, we wanted lesser known local artists to have a platform to feature their art and an opportunity to give back to their community at the same time.. Each artist donates a piece of work to the Lahaina Art Association Youth Outreach Program, a wonderful program supporting keiki of Maui County and art education.
