May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii Nei!

Aloha Y’all! Many Hawaiians and those who appreciate the culture are getting ready to celebrate one of the most beloved holidays of the year: May Day also known as Lei Day. This holiday is a time for honoring the history and traditions of the Hawaiian people through music, dance, and the giving of lei.

Visitors and locals alike are invited to join us at here Down the Hatch to submerse yourselves in a cultural experience that will educate us all on Hawaiian history!

On May 1st, Down the Hatch will be dressed in lei’s handmade by the staff accompanied by a blessing & conch blowing. Traditional storytelling of the May Day Kings & Queens will be shared along with live music and hula dancing! Guests will be able to indulge in traditional Hawaiian cuisine, such as poké, Kalua pork, and shave ice, while sipping on refreshing mai tais and other tropical cocktails.

One of the highlights of the day will be the lei-making workshop, where attendees can learn how to make their own lei using fresh flowers picked from Olowalu. This activity is not only fun but also educational, as it provides an opportunity to learn about the symbolism and meaning behind this iconic Hawaiian adornment.

The festive atmosphere and friendly vibe of the event are sure to make everyone feel like they're part of the ohana!

May Day is a significant celebration in Hawaiian culture, and Down the Hatch is proud to bring these traditions to the restaurant. Down the Hatch is excited and honored to be sharing the spirit of aloha as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii and the importance of keeping these traditions alive.

So, whether you're a Hawaiian native or just a lover of the culture, come join Down the Hatch on May 1st for a day of fun, food, and festivities. Mahalo for reading, and we hope to see y’all there!
